History: Davenport served as sexton at the First Parish Church (Congregational, later Unitarian) in Dorchester, Massachusetts. The First Parish Church of Dorchester (now Boston) was formed in Plymouth, England, and brought to Massachusetts in 1630.
Description: Record book contains a register of burials, including date of burial, fees for services of digging graves, attending the funeral, ringing the bell, and opening and closing the grave; notation of where the funeral was held, the name of officiant, cause of death, and age of the deceased. Some entries include names of family members, where the deceased was born, occupation, location at time of death, and certificate from the Health Office granting permission to remove the deceased for burial. Also includes daily accounts of work done, including the purchasing of grave stones, digging of graves, obtaining horses and wagons; names of workers (Patrick McDonald, Thomas Payson, and Henry Keely); parish accounts for expenses; records of pew rentals, and a genealogy of the Davenport family.
